While a student at the Graduate Center, CUNY, from 2005 to 2009, Ms. Musawwir focused on feminist art history from the early 1970s through the present with a concentration on multiculturalism. Her Master’s thesis completed at Hunter College in 2005 analyzed the 1990-2000s art discourse around international female artists Shazia Sikander and Ghada Amer. Ms. Musawwir is interested in curatorial projects that probe contemporary issues as they relate to gender, sexuality, race and nationality and seeks to develop opportunities for underrepresented artists. She co-curated The Wedding Project with Melissa Potter in 2004 for 65 Hope Street Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This exhibition explored the marketing frenzy and societal pressures that affect the ritual of marriage today across a sprectrum of cultures through the inclusion of artists drawing from their Korean, Lebanese, Filipino, Chinese and American experiences.
